Wudu is often the first act of worship a child learns to do with their own hands. It is practical, a little splashy, and something they can be proud of getting right. A calm, consistent routine is all it takes.
Why wudu matters
Allah describes wudu in the Quran: The Prophet ๏ทบ also said that when a believer washes in wudu, their sins leave with the water (Muslim 244). Children love hearing that their small sins "wash away" with the drops.
The steps, in order
- Intention. Explain that we are getting clean to pray. The intention is in the heart; it does not need to be said aloud.
- Bismillah. Say bismillah before starting.
- Hands: wash both hands up to the wrists, three times, between the fingers too.
- Mouth: take water into the mouth, swirl and spit, three times.
- Nose: sniff a little water gently into the nose and blow it out, three times.
- Face: wash the whole face from the hairline to the chin and from ear to ear, three times.
- Arms: the right arm from fingertips to just above the elbow, three times, then the left.
- Head: wipe wet hands over the head, front to back and back to front, once.
- Ears: wipe inside the ears with the index fingers and behind them with the thumbs.
- Feet: the right foot up to and including the ankle, three times, between the toes, then the left.
Afterwards, teach the dua: ุฃูุดูููุฏู ุฃููู ููุง ุฅููููฐูู ุฅููููุง ุงูููููู ููุญูุฏููู ููุง ุดูุฑูููู ููููุ ููุฃูุดูููุฏู ุฃูููู ู ูุญูู ููุฏูุง ุนูุจูุฏููู ููุฑูุณูููููู. The Prophet ๏ทบ said that the gates of Paradise are opened for whoever says it after wudu (Muslim 234).
Which parts are essential?
The verse in al-Ma'idah lists the essentials: washing the face, washing the arms to the elbows, wiping the head, and washing the feet to the ankles. Washing three times, the mouth and nose, and the order follow the Prophet's example; scholars of the four schools differ on which of these are obligatory. For children, the simplest approach is to teach the complete Sunnah way from the start.
Making it easy for small children
- A step stool so they can reach the sink comfortably.
- Do it side by side, saying each step out loud.
- A picture chart of the ten steps stuck by the sink.
- Count together: "one, two, three" for each wash.
- Turn the tap down, and teach not to waste water. The Prophet ๏ทบ used very little water for wudu.
- Roll sleeves up before starting, and keep a towel ready.
Common mistakes to watch for
- Missing the elbows or ankles.
- Leaving dry patches, especially on the heels and the backs of the arms.
- Doing the left side before the right.
- Rushing the face and missing the area near the ears.
Correct gently, by showing rather than scolding.
When wudu is broken
Teach the main things simply: going to the toilet, passing wind and falling into a deep sleep mean wudu needs to be done again. There are other details where the schools of fiqh differ; follow what your family and local scholars teach.
From wudu to salah
Once wudu becomes routine, link it straight to prayer: wudu, then mat, then "Allahu Akbar". Our guide to teaching children to pray continues from here.
In our Islamic studies classes for kids, teachers cover wudu, salah and everyday duas alongside Quran reading, in short, friendly one-on-one lessons.
