What you will learn
The order we teach it in
- Letter sounds first. If ุญ and ู sound the same, no rule can fix the word. See makharij al-huruf.
- Heavy and light letters, including when ุฑ and the lam of Allah change. See tafkheem and tarqeeq.
- Noon sakinah and tanween: izhar, idgham, iqlab and ikhfa. See the four rules.
- Meem sakinah and ghunnah.
- Qalqalah on ู ุท ุจ ุฌ ุฏ.
- Madd: 2, 4, 5 and 6 counts. See madd rules.
- Stopping and starting correctly. See rules of waqf.
Every rule is practised in real verses, starting with al-Fatiha and the short surahs you recite in prayer.
How a lesson works
- You read a passage; the teacher stops you on the exact word that needs work.
- The teacher models it, you repeat, and you move on only when it is right.
- New rules are introduced one at a time, then applied straight away in the mushaf.
- You leave with two or three specific things to practise before the next lesson.

Study Each Tajweed Rule in Depth
Your teacher covers these rules in class, but it helps to read about them between lessons. Each guide below explains one rule with examples from the Quran:
- Harakat: fatha, kasrah and dammah, the short vowels every reader starts with.
- Sukoon and shaddah, how a resting letter and a doubled letter should sound.
- Sun and moon letters, when the lam of "al-" is read and when it disappears.
- Hamzat al-wasl vs hamzat al-qat', the joining hamza and the cutting hamza.
- Izhaar, Idghaam, Iqlab and Ikhfa, the four ways noon sakinah and tanween are read.
- Meem sakinah rules, which work much like the noon rules but with three cases.
- Ghunnah, the nasal sound held on noon and meem.
- Qalqalah, the slight echo on the letters ู ุท ุจ ุฌ ุฏ when they carry a sukoon.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to learn tajweed?
Most students who already read Arabic script apply the core rules within three to six months of two or three lessons a week.
Can I learn tajweed online?
Yes. In live one-on-one lessons the teacher hears every letter and corrects it immediately, which is how tajweed is traditionally taught.
Do I need to finish Noorani Qaida first?
If you cannot yet read Arabic script, yes. If you can read but with mistakes, we can start tajweed directly after a short assessment.
Is this course suitable for children?
Yes. Children who have finished the Qaida learn tajweed as they begin reading the mushaf, with shorter lessons and plenty of practice.
Which recitation do you teach?
We teach the recitation of Hafs 'an 'Asim, the most widely read in the world. Advanced students can study other qira'at.
