Short surahs are a child's first real experience of the Quran as something they own. They recite them in prayer, before bed and in the car, and they feel proud when they can. Choosing a sensible order makes the start easier.
Start with the essentials

After these, many children continue with al-Qari'ah, al-'Adiyat, az-Zalzalah and the rest of Juz 'Amma, working backwards toward an-Naba.
How to teach a short surah
- Tell the story in one or two sentences.
- Listen to the surah two or three times from one clear reciter.
- One line at a time: you say it, they repeat, five times.
- Join lines: line one and two together, then add three.
- Recite it in prayer or at bedtime that same day.
- Revise daily for a week, then every few days.
Most children learn a three-verse surah in two or three days, and a nine-verse surah in a week or two.
Get the pronunciation right from the start
Children memorise exactly what they hear, mistakes included. A few things to watch in these surahs:
- The heavy ุต in ุงูุตููู ูุฏู and the qalqalah on ุฏ at the end of each verse of al-Ikhlas. See qalqalah.
- The ู at the end of ุงูููููููู, with a clear bounce.
- The ุญ in ุงูุฑููุญูู ููฐูู ุงูุฑููุญููู ู, not an English "h".
- The shaddah in ุฅููููุงูู and the long madd in ุงูุถููุงูููููู.
If you are unsure of your own pronunciation, have a teacher model the surahs, and use your time at home for repetition.
Keep it joyful
- A chart with a star for each surah learnt.
- Let them lead a family prayer with a surah they have just memorised.
- Ask them to teach the story of the surah to a younger sibling.
- Avoid comparing them to other children.
