Many of the mistakes that change meaning in recitation come from weight, not from the letter itself. ุตูุจูุฑู (patience) said lightly turns into ุณูุจูุฑู. ุทูุงุจู (became good) said lightly becomes ุชูุงุจู (repented). Same tongue position, different weight, different word.
What makes a letter heavy?
For a heavy letter, the back of the tongue rises toward the roof of the mouth. The mouth becomes a larger, rounder chamber, and the sound fills it. For a light letter, the tongue stays low and the sound is thinner. You can feel it: say ุณู then ุตู, and notice the back of your tongue lift on the second.
The seven always-heavy letters
ุฎ ุต ุถ ุบ ุท ู ุธ, gathered in the phrase ุฎูุตูู ุถูุบูุทู ููุธู.
Four of them, ุต ุถ ุท ุธ, are the heaviest because the tongue also presses up flat against the palate (a quality called itbaq). ุฎ ุบ ู are heavy without that pressing, so they are a little lighter.
The five levels of heaviness
Even a heavy letter is not always equally heavy. Its vowel affects it. From heaviest to lightest:
- With fatha followed by alif: ููุงููุ ุทูุงุจู
- With fatha alone: ุตูุจูุฑู
- With dammah: ูููู
- With sukoon: ููููุทูุนูููู
- With kasrah: ูููููุ ุตูุฑูุงุทู
Some teachers use four levels by merging two of these. Either way, a heavy letter with kasrah is still heavy, just less so. Making ูู sound like ูู is a mistake.
The letters that change
Ra (ุฑ)
Ra is heavy in most cases and light in a few. As a starting rule:
- Heavy when it has fatha or dammah: ุฑูุจููุ ุฑูุณูู.
- Light when it has kasrah: ุฑูุฌูุงู.
- When it has sukoon, look at the letter before it. After fatha or dammah it is heavy: ู ูุฑูููู ุ ุงููููุฑูุขู. After kasrah it is usually light: ููุฑูุนูููู, unless a heavy letter follows in the same word, as in ููุฑูุทูุงุณ, where it stays heavy.
- After a temporary kasrah, such as the connecting hamza in ุงุฑูุฌูุนููุง, it is heavy.

The lam in the name of Allah
- Heavy after fatha or dammah: ููุงูู ุงููููููุ ุฑูุณููู ุงูููููู, and at the start of reading: ุงูููููู ููุง ุฅููููฐูู ุฅููููุง ูููู.
- Light after kasrah: ุจูุณูู ู ุงููููููุ ููููููู.
Only the lam of the word Allah does this. Every other lam is always light.
Alif
Alif has no weight of its own. It copies the letter before it: heavy in ููุงููุ ุทูุงูู, light in ููุงููุ ุจูุงุจู.
Common mistakes
- Making light letters heavy because they sit next to a heavy one, for example reading the ุช in ุชูุตูุฏูููู as ุท.
- Rounding the lips to fake heaviness. Weight comes from the tongue, not the lips.
- Making ุง after a light letter heavy, so ููุงูู sounds like kawn.
- Thinning heavy letters with kasrah, so ุตูุฑูุงุทู loses its weight.
How to train your ear
Practise in pairs: ุณู/ุตูุ ุชู/ุทูุ ุฏู/ุถูุ ุฐู/ุธูุ ูู/ููุ ูู/ุญู. Read al-Fatiha slowly and mark every heavy letter and every ra. When is ra heavy and when is it light?

What is the difference between tafkheem and tarqeeq?
Tafkheem is pronouncing a letter with a full, heavy sound by raising the back of the tongue. Tarqeeq is pronouncing it lightly with the tongue kept low.
