It is usually one of the first surahs a child memorises, and one of the most recited in prayer. Its name, al-Ikhlas, means "sincerity" or "purity": it purifies belief in Allah from anything that does not belong to Him, and whoever believes in it sincerely is purified from shirk.

Why it was revealed

A narration in at-Tirmidhi reports that the idolaters said to the Prophet ﷺ, "Describe your Lord's lineage to us," and Allah revealed this surah in reply (at-Tirmidhi 3364). In a culture where gods had families and tribes had genealogies, the question was natural. The answer is four verses that rule out every comparison.

Verse by verse

1. قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ

"Say: He is Allah, the One." The surah opens with qul, "say", a command to the Prophet ﷺ and to everyone after him to proclaim this openly. Ahad is a stronger word than wahid (one). It means one in a way that admits no partner, no division and no second of His kind. Allah is one in His essence, in His names and attributes, and in being the only one worthy of worship.

2. اللَّهُ الصَّمَدُ

"Allah, as-Samad." This name is hard to translate in one word, so the classical scholars explained it in several ways that fit together. Ibn 'Abbas described as-Samad as the Master whose mastery is complete, to whom all creatures turn in their needs. Others among the early generations explained it as the One who is not hollow, who does not eat or drink, and who remains after all creation passes away. Put simply: everything depends on Him, and He depends on nothing.

3. لَمْ يَلِدْ وَلَمْ يُولَدْ

"He neither begets nor is born." This verse answers the question directly. Allah has no children and no parents. Having offspring implies needing a successor or sharing one's nature with another, and being born implies having a beginning. Both are impossible for the One who is eternal and self-sufficient. The verse rejects every belief that gives Allah a son, daughter or family.

4. وَلَمْ يَكُنْ لَهُ كُفُوًا أَحَدٌ

"And there is none comparable to Him." Kufuwan means an equal or match. Nothing in creation resembles Him, as Allah also says: لَيْسَ كَمِثْلِهِ شَيْءٌ, "There is nothing like Him" (ash-Shura 42:11).

Its virtues

• Equal to a third of the Quran. The Prophet ﷺ said, "By the One in whose hand is my soul, it is equal to a third of the Quran" (al-Bukhari 5013). Scholars explain that the Quran's content can be divided into three themes, belief in Allah, stories, and rulings, and al-Ikhlas covers the first completely. It does not mean reading it three times replaces reading the whole Quran.
• Love of it leads to Paradise. A Companion who led prayer used to recite al-Ikhlas in every rak'ah. When asked why, he said he loved it because it describes the Most Merciful. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Tell him that Allah loves him" (al-Bukhari 7375). In another narration he said, "Your love for it will admit you into Paradise."
• Part of daily protection. The Prophet ﷺ recited al-Ikhlas, al-Falaq and an-Nas before sleeping, blew into his hands and wiped over his body (al-Bukhari 5017). These three are also recommended in the morning and evening and after prayers.

Lessons from the surah

• Belief in one God is not a vague idea. It has clear content: unique, self-sufficient, without family, without equal.
• Our needs should be taken to as-Samad, the One everything depends on.
• When explaining Islam to children or friends, these four verses are a complete, simple answer to "Who is Allah?"

Teaching it to children

Because it is short and rhythmic, al-Ikhlas is often a child's first or second surah. Teach the meaning along with the words, one verse a day, and ask simple questions: Does Allah need food? Does Allah have a mum and dad? Children love answering these from the surah.
