Ubayy ibn Ka'b was asked by the Prophet ﷺ which verse in the Book of Allah is the greatest. He answered, "Allah, there is no god but Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer." The Prophet ﷺ struck his chest and said, "May knowledge be pleasing to you, Abu al-Mundhir" (Muslim 810). Here is why this verse holds that place.
The verse
Sentence by sentence
1. "Allah, there is no god except Him"
The verse opens with tawhid: nothing deserves worship except Allah. Everything that follows explains why.
2. "The Ever-Living, the Self-Sustaining"
Al-Hayy is the One whose life is perfect, without beginning or end, and not dependent on anything. Al-Qayyum is the One who exists by Himself and sustains everything else. Every created thing needs Him to keep existing; He needs nothing. Some scholars held that these two names together are Allah's greatest name, as they appear together in al-Baqarah, Al 'Imran and Ta-Ha.
3. "Neither drowsiness nor sleep overtakes Him"
Sinah is the light drowsiness before sleep; nawm is sleep itself. Allah is free of both. This follows naturally from al-Qayyum: one who sustains everything cannot lapse for even a moment.
4. "To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth"
Complete ownership. Everything we have, including our own selves, is His.
5. "Who could intercede with Him except by His permission?"
Even intercession, which Muslims believe the Prophet ﷺ and others will be granted, happens only by Allah's permission. No one has independent influence over Him.
6. "He knows what is before them and what is behind them"
His knowledge covers past and future, what is seen and what is hidden.
7. "And they encompass nothing of His knowledge except what He wills"
Whatever any creature knows, it knows because Allah allowed it. Human knowledge is real, but borrowed and limited.
8. "His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth"
The verse takes its name from this sentence. Ibn 'Abbas explained the Kursi as the place of the Feet, distinct from the Throne ('Arsh), which is greater still. Mainstream Sunni scholarship affirms this as Allah described it, without likening it to anything in creation and without asking "how". The point for the reader is scale: the heavens and earth, vast as they are, are small next to His creation, let alone next to Him.
9. "Preserving them does not tire Him"
Keeping the entire universe in existence costs Him no effort at all.
10. "And He is the Most High, the Most Great"
The verse closes with two names: al-'Aliyy, exalted above everything in His essence, status and power, and al-'Azim, the Magnificent.
Virtues from the Sunnah
- The greatest verse in the Quran (Muslim 810).
- Protection at night. In a long narration, Abu Hurayrah was told that whoever recites Ayat al-Kursi on going to bed will have a guardian from Allah and no devil will come near him until morning. The Prophet ﷺ confirmed this was true (al-Bukhari 2311).
- After every obligatory prayer. The Prophet ﷺ said that whoever recites it after each prescribed prayer, nothing prevents him from entering Paradise except death (an-Nasa'i in as-Sunan al-Kubra 9928; graded authentic by several scholars).
Lessons for daily life
- When you feel tired or overwhelmed, remember that the One you rely on never tires and never sleeps.
- Everything you have is His. Use it accordingly, and do not grieve too much over what is lost.
- Your knowledge is a gift. Be humble about it and keep seeking more.
- Make it part of your routine: after each fard prayer and before sleeping.
Memorising and reciting it
It is one of the longest verses children and new Muslims memorise early. Break it into the ten sentences above and learn one or two a day. Pay attention to the madd muttasil in السَّمَاوَاتِ and شَاءَ, the silah in عِنْدَهُۥٓ إِلَّا and the ghunnah in مَنْ ذَا. See our madd guide.
