Sometimes a teacher is excellent on paper and still not right for your child. The pace is too fast, the style too serious, or there is simply no spark. That is not unusual and it is not anyone's fault. What matters is spotting it, understanding why, and fixing it before your child starts to associate the Quran with a bad experience.
First: is it the teacher, or just the start?
Most children are wary of a new adult for the first few lessons, especially online. Before deciding the match is wrong, give it three to five lessons. Signs it is just early nerves: your child is quiet but engaged, slowly answering more, and does not dread lessons beforehand.
Signs the fit is not right
- Your child is upset or anxious before every lesson, week after week.
- They say the teacher is "too strict", "boring" or "gets cross".
- They switch off during class and look at you rather than the screen.
- Progress has stalled for several weeks.
- Lessons feel the same every time, with no variety for a young child.
Find the real cause
| What you notice | Possible cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Child is overwhelmed, close to tears | Pace too fast or too many corrections at once | Ask the teacher to slow down and focus on one thing per lesson |
| Child is bored, fidgety | Lesson too long or too repetitive | Shorter lessons, more variety, games |
| Child is fine some days, not others | Timing: tired or hungry | Move the lesson to a better time |
| Child is frightened or withdrawn | Teacher's manner is too stern for this child | Talk to the teacher; consider a change |
| Child is shy and silent | Temperament, not the teacher | See our tips for shy children |
Talk to the teacher
Most teachers welcome feedback and can adjust a lot. Be specific and kind: "Aisha gets anxious when she makes several mistakes in a row. Could you correct one thing at a time and give her more praise?" or "Yusuf focuses better in the first 15 minutes. Could we try shorter lessons?" Give the changes two or three lessons to work.
When to ask for a different teacher
If things have not improved after talking and adjusting, ask the academy for a change. This is a normal request, and you should not need to justify it at length. Things to ask:
- Can the new teacher see notes on where my child is up to?
- Can we keep the same time slot?
- Can my child have a trial lesson with the new teacher first?
A good academy will make the switch smoothly and make sure your child continues from where they were, not from the beginning.
Talk to your child, too
Ask open questions: "What is the best part of Quran class? What is the hardest part?" Children often reveal more when they are drawing or in the car than when asked directly. Reassure them that it is fine to say they do not like something, and that you will help.
Protect their relationship with the Quran
Whatever happens with the teacher, keep the Quran itself positive at home. Short, happy practice, stories behind the surahs, and your own example matter more than any single teacher. Our article on motivating your child has ideas.
What we do
At Online Study Quran Academy, if a child does not settle with their teacher, we arrange a different teacher from our team. You can see who teaches on our teachers page. If you are moving from another academy, see how to switch without losing progress.
Questions parents and students ask us
How long should I wait before changing my child's Quran teacher?
Give it three to five lessons first, then talk to the teacher about specific issues and allow a few more lessons for changes to work.
Is it normal for a child not to like their Quran teacher?
Yes, sometimes the teaching style or pace simply does not suit a particular child. It is common and fixable.
Will my child lose progress if they change teachers?
Not if the academy passes on notes about their level and the new teacher continues from where they were.
What should I say to the teacher?
Be specific and kind: describe what you have noticed and suggest a change, such as slower pace, shorter lessons or more praise.
